World Rhino Day – 22 September…’Paint ’em Pink’!

right_small_banner1World Rhino Day is 22 September, a day set aside to showcase the catastrophic loss of rhinos due to senseless poaching throughout Africa and Asia.

To help raise awareness for this cause, Thumbprint Artifacts is asking ‘friends and family’ to paint your toe nails pink! Post a photo of your pink toenails on the Thumbprint Artifacts facebook page click here to help raise awareness and support the cause.

In 2014, a total of 1,215 rhinos were poached in South Africa alone. That equates to 1 rhino illegally killed every 8 hours. In 2007, only 13 rhinos were poached for their horns but since then over 4.000 rhinos have been slaughtered in South Africa. If the poaching continues at this rate, rhinos will be extinct by 2026 – just 10 years time.
Why? This needless killing is driven by the myth that the substance in a rhino’s horn has healing powers or acts as an aphrodisiac. In reality, the horn is made of Keratin, the same matter that is in fingernails and hair. Therefore if the myth was true, chewing fingernails and eating hair would have the same effect.rhino head
