Sharon hand paints the candles at Kapula. She has been at Kapula for 17 years starting with them not long after they started. At that time, Kapula reached out to the woman in the community who had not opportunity for work. She is a single mother with three children. After 5 years with the company, she became a trainer. This made her ‘very proud’ as she puts it, “she became someone!” Her employment at Kapula is very important to her and her family. Jobs are very difficult to find in the small community of Bredasdorp located approximately 2.5 hours outside Cape Twon. So not only financially is it important but when overtime is not required, it allows her to spend some time with her children on the weekends. In her opinion “I think we are designing the most beautiful candles in the whole world because they are all handmade by two hands. When I see my work in the shop – it is the most incredible feeling!” She feels she must give her best everyday, because ‘I only benefit if the company benefits.’
